LD1 Team Recognize Women in Construction Week

Senator Michael Testa Jr., Assemblymen Erik Simonsen and Antwan McClellan proudly recognize Women in Construction Week, honoring the skilled tradeswomen who are strengthening New Jersey’s workforce, building critical infrastructure, and serving as leaders within the construction industry.

Women in Construction Week highlights the growing role of women across all sectors of the construction field—from apprentices and journeyworkers to project managers, executives, and union leaders. As New Jersey continues to invest in infrastructure, economic development, and workforce training, the contributions of women in the trades are more important than ever.

“Women are playing an increasingly vital role in shaping the future of construction in New Jersey,” Assemblyman Erik Simonsen said. “Their expertise, leadership, and dedication are helping to modernize our workforce and ensure high standards of craftsmanship across our state.”

Assemblyman Antwan McClellan added, “This week is an opportunity to recognize the achievements of women who have built lasting careers in construction and to encourage the next generation to pursue opportunities in the skilled trades. Expanding access to apprenticeship and union training programs strengthens families, communities, and our state’s economy.”

"When women are trained and empowered in the construction trades, the results are undeniable—stronger teams, greater innovation, and barriers that once stood tall coming down" Senator Michael Testa Jr. stated. "Their success is building more than structures; it’s building a more inclusive and resilient industry for the future."

Cyndie Williams, Executive Director of the Carpenter Contractor Trust and a respected leader in the industry, reflected on her career and the impact of union training programs. She explained that the Carpenters Union provided her with the foundation and support to reflect on a rich and fulfilling career

“I started as a carpenter's apprentice 28 years ago, gaining knowledge from elite craftspeople and learning all aspects of the trade. The Carpenters Union gives its members the tools to become productive leaders and I personally make it a priority to share that story with others,” Williams added.

Williams’ journey exemplifies the opportunity and upward mobility available through structured apprenticeship programs and strong labor partnerships. Her leadership continues to inspire women throughout New Jersey and the region to pursue meaningful, high-skill careers in construction.

Assemblymen Simonsen and McClellan reaffirm their commitment to policies that support workforce development, promote equal opportunity in the trades, and expand access to high-quality training programs.

“Being a woman in construction means building more than structures, it means building respect, breaking barriers, and proving strength has no gender. And thanks to the powerful outreach and commitment of ABC -NJ to bring more women into the industry, we’re not just opening doors, we’re holding them open for the next generation,” added Samantha DeAlmeida Roman.

Samantha DeAlmeida Roman is the President & CEO of the Associated Builders and Contractors – New Jersey Chapter, where she has been a strong advocate for the construction industry and a champion for empowering women across the state.

Women in Construction Week serves as both a celebration and a call to action—recognizing the achievements of today’s leaders while building pathways for tomorrow’s.
