Simonsen Calls for Continued Search and Community Support for Missing Delaware Bay Fisherman
(Villas, NJ) — Assemblyman Erik Simonsen is urging continued efforts and public vigilance in the search for Matthew Oliver, a 47-year-old commercial fisherman who went overboard from the F/V Bon Secour in the Delaware Bay five days ago.
Despite an extensive response by the United States Coast Guard — which conducted 10 searches covering more than 77 square nautical miles — no sign of Mr. Oliver has been found, and the official search has been suspended pending further developments. His family, however, continues to search the bayshore daily, holding onto hope and seeking closure.
Assemblyman Simonsen, whose own roots are deeply connected to South Jersey’s fishing industry, underscored the urgency of continued community involvement.
“My father was a commercial fisherman and a captain, and I was raised in a fishing family. I understand firsthand the risks these men and women take every day to make a living on the water,” said Simonsen. “Matthew Oliver is one of our own — a hardworking waterman and member of a tight-knit community. We should not leave anyone behind.”
Mr. Oliver, a lifelong oysterman from Millville, disappeared shortly after noon last Thursday as the vessel traveled near Gandy’s Beach in Cumberland County. A mayday call prompted an immediate search response.
Simonsen is calling on local fishermen, boaters, and residents along the Delaware Bay and surrounding waterways to remain alert and report anything that could aid in locating Mr. Oliver.
“In communities like ours, we look out for each other,” Simonsen added. “Even as official efforts pause, we must continue to stand with this family and do everything we can to help bring Matthew home.”
Anyone with information or possible sightings is urged to contact local authorities.
