Assembly Committee Advances Bill Co-Sponsored by Simonsen and McClellan to Improve Seizure Care in Schools
Cape May Court House, NJ - Assemblymen Erik Simonsen and Antwan McClellan have co-sponsored Assembly Bill A2255, a bipartisan measure that ensures all New Jersey school staff are trained every two years in how to care for students with epilepsy and seizure disorders. The bill has successfully advanced out of the Assembly Education Committee, where Assemblyman Erik Simonsen proudly serves as a member.
The bill updates "Paul’s Law" to require regular training for all school employees, including those involved in after-school programs. The training, approved by the Department of Health, will be provided online or in person by a national nonprofit specializing in epilepsy support.
"As a former special education teacher, I know how important it is for every adult in a school to recognize and respond to a seizure. Training gives staff the confidence to act quickly and safely," said Assemblyman Simonsen. "This bill ensures no child is left at risk simply because the wrong person was nearby when help was needed. It reflects our commitment to protecting all students."
Assemblyman McClellan added, "Serving on the Ocean City School Board taught me how much families trust schools to care for their children. That includes being ready for medical emergencies like seizures. This bill provides consistency and peace of mind. It makes sure all staff are trained and ready to support students with epilepsy throughout the school day and beyond."
The bill will take effect at the start of the next full school year following enactment.
